Getting Airspace Authorization (LAANC)

What is LAANC?

LAANC (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability) is a system that lets Part 107 pilots request and receive near-instant airspace authorization to fly in controlled airspace.

How to Get LAANC Authorization:

  1. Download an FAA-approved LAANC app
  2. Create flight plan with location and altitude
  3. Submit authorization request
  4. Receive approval (usually within seconds)
  5. Fly within approved parameters

Popular LAANC Apps:

  • • Aloft (formerly Kittyhawk)
  • • AirMap
  • • DJI Fly
  • • DroneZone
  • • Skyward

Memory Tips for the Exam

Remember: "A Big Cat Does Everything Good"

This mnemonic helps you remember the order of airspace from most restrictive to least:

A
Class A
B
Class B
C
Class C
D
Class D
E
Class E
G
Class G

Class A = most restrictive (no drones), Class G = least restrictive (fly freely below 400 ft)
